The Chroma Collection—nature, amplified.
There are moments in nature that stop us in our tracks. Moments so striking, so filled with colour and light, they demand our full attention. The Chroma Collection was born out of one of those moments—not in the forest or on the shoreline, but in the lines of a poem.
A single stanza by my dear friend and poetic muse, Samantha of Bentlily, pierced something deep within me:
"I am brought to my knees
by the way the sun sears holes
in the bottom of the sky
so that the colour can spill out."
These words didn't just move me—they physically stirred something in me. I felt it in my chest, in my breath, in my hands. And I followed that feeling into the studio.
The Chroma Collection is made up of five original paintings, each infused with that same electrifying energy. These are not quiet, subtle landscapes. These are bold, luminous expressions of awe. Of reverence. Of the ecstatic, nearly unbearable beauty of nature when it reveals itself in full chromatic glory.
Each painting in this collection is named for the specific feeling it evoked in me: Ember, Slice, Prism, Aura, Jewel. These titles aren’t just descriptors—they are invitations. To feel something. To remember something. To connect with the part of you that is still wild and deeply moved by a beam of light through trees, or the sudden flare of pink against a twilight sky.
As a West Coast landscape painter, I am endlessly inspired by the drama and quiet power of our local environment. But with this collection, I pushed beyond physical painting. I leaned into sensation. Into light. Into colour that hums with energy.
For The Chroma Collection, I took a bold departure from my usual palette of muted West Coast tones and leaned into colour with a kind of reverence. Every hue is heightened—reds, pinks, purples, and high-chroma yellows and oranges rarely seen in my previous work. What you see in nature, I amplified, infusing each canvas with an emotional intensity meant to echo the inner experience of awe.
While nature remains my anchor, each painting in this collection came to life through a unique process. Some began with a photo reference, resulting in a more realistic portrayal of a familiar coastal view. Others emerged from my imagination—more interpretive, even graphic in style. Regardless of the source, I always compose my scenes intentionally, guided by principles like the rule of thirds, leading lines, colour harmony, and visual weight. It’s not just about what’s seen, but how it’s arranged to invite the eye and stir the heart.
Stylistically, I approached each piece with intuition. Like the oil painters of the past, I began with a ground and an underpainting, often in warm yellowa, burnt oranges, or rusty brown tones. Then, using watery washes of acrylic paint, I built layers—thin, watery veils of colour that allow light to radiate from within. At times, I moved into thicker, more impasto brushwork to create contrast and emphasis.
No two paintings followed the same path. I often paused for hours between layers, stepping back to see what the painting asked for next. That quiet space—the space of consideration and recalibration—is where much of the magic happens.
The result is a collection that feels both visceral and carefully composed. Technically layered, emotionally bold. Each painting, its own journey.
The Chroma Collection is for those who live in love with the outdoors. For those who understand that the natural world isn't just pretty—it's transformational. It's soulful. And it deserves a place in our homes that reminds us, every day, of what it means to feel truly alive.
Whether you are a seasoned collector or discovering my work for the first time, I invite you to explore this special collection. These paintings are bold, refined, and full of heart—perfect for those who value craftsmanship, originality, and the quiet luxury of living close to nature.
Thank you for letting me share my most vivid work yet. I hope The Chroma Collection speaks to you as deeply as it did to me.
With warmth,
Ronéi
