MOMMY DEAREST, FACETIOUS FATHER
This collection of ten paintings are reflections of fading memories and a joyous childhood. Captivating qualities of these pieces include: embedded silver and gold glitter, some of which are embedded in a HIGH gloss resin finish; layered glazes in pinks, blues and soft whites and splattered, dripped paint all of which impart a feeling of movement and depth.
This new series of paintings are my way of capturing the memories that are slowly escaping my parents, due to their dementias. I have mixed visual and auditory memories into my work. The imagery in these paintings are symbols of my father’s rain-soaked heirloom rose garden; my mother’s parchment-like textured floral wallpapers and her delicate rose covered chinaware. The titles of the paintings are my family’s catch-phrases that spark sweet memories of my childhood, like, "You're not just a pretty face" and "You're my favourite daughter".
My hope is that you will be encouraged to shift your focus in your life, as I have, from focusing away from the negative and instead towards the positive; to become present in your own life and savour the smallest and seemingly insignificant moments with the ones you love.
